First time students:

  • If you have never used your benefit, submit an application at http://vabenefits.vba.va.gov/vonapp/about_vonapp.asp or at the local Veteran’s Affairs Office.  This includes those entitled to Chapter 30 (Active Duty), Chapter 35 (Survivors of Disabled Veterans), Chapter 1606 (Reservists GI Bill) and Chapter 1607 (REAP).  After you have completed this process, it is important that you notify our office so that we can certify your enrollment during the first week of class.
  • A few weeks later, you will receive your certificate of eligibility.  We ask that you bring a copy in to the financial aid office.  The first week of school, Sowela will certify your enrollment with Veteran’s Affairs.  Normally it takes approximately one month for the student to begin receiving their benefit.

 

  • Students must go online at www.gibill.va.gov or call 1-877-823-2378 at the end of each month to verify their enrollment .

 

  • Please note that web courses currently cannot be certified as part of your enrollment at Sowela.
  • At this time the following programs do not qualify for VA benefits: General Studies, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration, Dietary Management, and Nursing Assistant.

National Guard Fee Waiver

  • The financial aid office receives a list of eligible waiver recipients each semester.  Please contact our office to verify that your name is on the list.  After contacting the Financial Aid Office, you must notify the Sowela Business Office during fee payment of your eligibility for the waiver.
